Anne B. and James R. Carr, M.D. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Anne upon her death early February of 2007. Anne was educated in the Hamilton schools and was valedictorian of the Hamilton High School Class of 1955. While a senior at Hamilton High School, Anne was the second recipient of the Hamilton Community Foundation Scholarships. She went on to Miami University where she was the only summa cum laude graduate in the Class of 1959. Anne was an impactful leader in many organizations, but she was particularly proud of her work of expanding the Hamilton Community’s Foundation’s scholarship program and served as the selection committee chairperson for many years.
In 2015, James passed away and his name was added to this scholarship. Dr. Carr was regarded as a tireless community leader, champion for the city’s children and devoted family man. He was known throughout his life for an endearing, altruistic nature that had a far-reaching impact, especially in Hamilton, a city he truly cherished. Dr. Carr was an honor student and senior class president at Hamilton High School. Following his graduation in 1944, he served two years in the United States Navy. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical College in 1956. He completed his internship and residency at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He served as president of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity and was also a member of the Sigma Chi social fraternity. Specializing in the field of urology, Dr. Carr practiced medicine for 36 years – the first six in Cincinnati and the last 30 in Hamilton.
James and Anne have three children, James Carr of West Hartford, Conn., Katherine Christen, PhD, of Hamilton, and David Carr of Fairfield and three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Carson.
This scholarship is to benefit a Hamilton High School or New Miami High School student who has a passion for continuing their education beyond high school.
